September 19th Training Camp News and Notes

Larkin1Training camp is all about competition for roster spots. This year’s camp is no different than any other year in that department. The Red Wings have lots of young players – both forwards and defensemen who are pushing for roster spots. Unfortunately there is very little room, but a strong training camp and exhibition season might change minds or at the very least help establish the depth chart.

Among the forwards battling for a roster spot are Dylan Larkin and Anthony Mantha. The duo are some of the organizations top up and coming … Continue Reading

September 18th Training Camp News and Notes

Verrier1The opening day of the Red Wings training camp was marred by a scary incident just minutes into team Delvecchio’s practice. Free agent tryout Jerome Verrier and Darren Helm collided while participating in intersquad drills. The force of the impact left both players down on the ice for several minutes. Helm was the first on his feet but he had to be helped off the ice while Verrier had to be stretchered off. Both players went to the hospital for precautionary reasons with Helm going through the concussion protocol. Verrier’s training camp … Continue Reading

Professional Mindset: Nastasiuk Excited for AHL Chance

Nastasiuk1Long gone is the wide-eyed excited rookie who participated in his first NHL prospect tournament back in 2013. In his place is a confident and eager Zach Nastasiuk who is ready to earn his first professional roster spot.

“I am ready and excited for this,” he said. “I’ve been working all summer on my legs and feet. Doing a lot of power skating so I can be quicker out there.”

The 20 year-old finished his final season with the Owen Sound Attack of the OHL. Nastasiuk, who served as captain last season, had his … Continue Reading

Something to Prove: Underrated Nosek Could See NHL Time this Season

Nosek1Tomas Nosek is not the most talked about player at NHL prospect tournament and he isn’t even a top line player for the Red Wings. That said the 23 year-old center led all Detroit forwards in goals with three and he tied Andreas Athanasiou and Dylan Larkin for the most points with five.

“I am happy I scored some goals and had some good results,” he said. “We lost the final game so it doesn’t matter if you score a goal. I just want to help the team to win but it wasn’t enough tonight.”

The … Continue Reading

Reflections on the Matthew Wuest Memorial Cup

Emma Poliquin Photography

If you see me today, I will likely have tears welling in my eyes. If there’s one thing I have learned these past few years is that you have to figure out a way to ride the emotional waves. Today I expect the waves to be high and sometimes I am not the best surfer.

The first ever Matthew Wuest Memorial Cup will be awarded and there will be reason to celebrate the eventual champion whether it is Detroit or Columbus, but I’ll look to the sky and … Continue Reading

Breaking Through: Svechnikov Nets First Goal of the Tournament

Svechnikov1Outside of Andreas Athanasiou, no player was more overdue for their first goal of the NHL prospect tournament than Evgeny Svechnikov. The 6-foot-2, 199 pound forward has been one of the more noticeable forwards outside of the top line for the Red Wings picking up two assists in the first two games and finally scoring Monday night against the Dallas Stars.

“He’s had chances the whole tournament,” Head Coach Todd Nelson said. “He’s been robbed a few times and missed the net a few time, but the goal he scored tonight was one … Continue Reading
